Pakistan Railways App
UX Design
The Brief
This project was for a graduate class called ‘Visual Interface and Information Design’. The brief was to pick a step of the design thinking process and build a project based on that step. I chose to focus on wireframing and prototyping. The suitable next step was to redesign an existing application.
The Idea
I have always seen a lag in the progress of digital products in Pakistan, be it in banking, transport, or any other industry. I began to imagine the products I would like to see in the Pakistani mainstream. As a step towards this re-imagination, I redesigned thePakistan Railways mobile app, attempting to fix the various UX issues as well as creating a strong visual identity
The Challenge
I have always seen a lag in the progress of digital products in Pakistan, be it in banking, transport, or any other industry. I began to imagine the products I would like to see in the Pakistani mainstream. As a step towards this re-imagination, I redesigned thePakistan Railways mobile app, attempting to fix the various UX issues as well as creating a strong visual identity
Visual clutter: Overuse of saturated colors, complex icons, unnecessary imagery and confusing layout makes the experience unpleasant.

No Language Options: The app was in English by default, thereby excluding a large majority of users who are not comfortable with the language.

Lack of Hierarchy: Information is organized without logical hierarchy. For a transportation app with large amounts of high stakes information, visual hierarchy is all the more important.

Cannot Book Without Login: Most transportation apps allow you to book as a guest. This app does notallow one-time users to book tickets.

Confusing Userflow: The userflow departs from convention in all the wrong places with buttons in unexpected places and confusing steps
Identity Redesign
The visual identity of Pakistan Railways needed a major overhaul. The logo was outdated, cluttered, and unscalable. The new visual identity offers a modernised type system and color palette and a scalable, legible, and meaningful logo. The logo merges symbols of speed, motion, the crescent moon from the Pakistani flag, and a railway track. Collectively, the identity forms a strong foundation for building a design system for the app.
